St. Mark’s Square is the beating heart of Venice, one of the most famous and fascinating squares in the world. St. Mark’s Basilica is one of the most splendid examples of Byzantine art and architecture in Italy. Built in the 9th century, the basilica is dedicated to St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice. Its facade is decorated with golden mosaics depicting biblical scenes, while the interior is a masterpiece of mosaic art, with more than 8,000 square meters of mosaics covering the walls and ceilings.

The design of the basilica reflects the influence of Byzantine culture, featuring a Greek cross plan and a series of domes that give the building a unique majesty. The building also houses the Pala d’Oro, an altar richly decorated with gold and precious stones, which is one of the basilica’s most important treasures.

Palazzo Ducale

The Doge’s Palace in Venice is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, located next to St. Mark’s Square. It was the residence of the Doge and the center of power of the Republic of Venice. Its facade, adorned with arches and columns, overlooks the square, while the interior houses historic rooms such as the Chamber of the Great Council and the Golden Staircase, featuring artworks by Tintoretto and Veronese. One of the most evocative points of the Doge’s Palace is the Bridge of Sighs, a covered bridge that connects the palace to the New Prisons.

The name derives from the tradition according to which prisoners, while being transferred from the court to the prison, would sigh as they saw the daylight for the last time through the small windows of the bridge. Today, the Doge’s Palace is one of Venice’s most important museums and a leading tourist attraction. The palace also hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events, standing as a testament to the power and grandeur of Venice in past centuries.
